Echo Park Lake

Echo Park Lake

Echo Park didn’t start out as a man-made lake, it was known as Reservoir No. 4 in 1868, and the city bought 33 acres of land around the reservoir in 1891 so that it could be used as a park. By 1895, the park and accompanying boathouse were completed. Coming to the end of its first century, Echo Park Lake had become a victim of urban neglect. In the early 1980s a group of activists in Angelino Heights won approval of a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. And soon after that other civic groups stepped up to focus on Echo Park needs, In 2006, Echo Park Lake was identified by the State of California as an impaired water body and was drained in 2011, the renovation has been completed and the park and lake is slated to open to the public in May 2013
